December 2010Thank you God for the incredible weather. I know I've only been here for 50 years in this lifetime, but I've never seen such magical sights. Trees covered in Hoar Frost and Snow over most of Somerset and Bristol. Simply glorious. Suchtransient beauty; all gone in a day and a half - but what a day and a half!
This image was made with my new large format digital camera, a Cambo Wide DS, with Schneider Apo-Digitar 35mm XL lens with a Phase One P45 (39 Megapixel Digital Back). No, it's not a Christmas present to myself, this is my job! It's incredibly sharp: -
My car temperature guage reached it's lowest point ever; minus 8 degrees. The edge of the sea was frozen here in Burnham: -

November 2010Yet another Autumn has gone by without making it up to Scotland, disappointing. Still, the reason I couldn't go is because I was busy with clients, so no complaints. I missed the peak time at Westonbirt too, but still managed toget a few shots that I was happy with: -
The shot above of the rebuilt Grand Pier was taken on a wet evening that showed no promise at all. Luckily, the Phase One camera takes such good long exposures that I still managed to get a good shot, with plenty of detail (39 megapixels) and colour (16 bit processors). My timing was good for getting some foreground detail before it was covered by the incoming tide. I love Beech Trees at any time of the year, but in Autumn some of the leaves go golden, some brown and some stay green, making a great subject close up or far away. They have interesting smooth silver bark and are great shapes too, whether in leaf or bare in winter. Definitely in my top five Trees.

| After September was such a great month for photography, I'm not expecting too much from October, but mine's off to a fine start with a great panoramic of Watermouth Bay in Devon. Seamlessly stitching 7 images together makes this a 64 megapixel image(!) that will enlarge to wall size.
I spent too long driving around to find 'the view' though, frustrated by parking charges everywhere (this doesn't happen in France, over here everyone's too greedy to take some money off you) and a Private Beach (shouldn't be allowed; the council should buy it back for everyone to use). Finally I found a way to park near the South West Coast Path, and walked to the view. Been having fun with my compact camera (Canon s90), and here's an image of St Pauls Cathedral taken hand-held (I was with my wife, so no tripod). Good performance for a compact, but not good enough to go on sale: - ![]() The image below was very lucky; I'd photographed it the day before and felt like I'd covered it. Then, whilst driving past in unpromising midday sun I saw the clouds looking good, and by the time I'd set up this amazing cumulus cloud moved into exactly the right place. It perfectly echoes the line formed by the hedge in the lower part of the shot. This gives the composition a sense of balance
My favourite trip so far this month was to Golitha Falls on Bodmin Moor, Cornwall. Stunning in Autumn with it's layer of fallen Beech leaves (see below). The Starlings are flocking together on the Somerset Levels; I've been twice to Shapwick Heath already but didn't get a photograph worthy of publishing here. Got a good cloud image with no Starlings instead
This months message to myself is to get out of the car and walk; there's only so much you can see from the front seat |
