March 2011

A great few hours at Westonbirt Arboretum, Spring is such a magical time to be here. Rhododendrons and Magnolias in flower; the scent of the Magnolias was really something. England is getting warmer at last, fresh green leaves
are emerging, signalling the start of the glorious Spring season, hooray!

21/3/11 Dawn was beautiful this morning, sounds of Blackbirds, Larks and a Woodpecker pecking. It was too cloudy for photography, but I managed to get an image before the sun was smothered in grey

Used my DSLR to take some shots of the trees at Westonbirt Arboretum, makes a nice change carrying a lightweight Canon 5DMk2 - I haven't used it for months, preferring to use my larger cameras. I could spend hours at Westonbirt, it's normally so peaceful with birds singing in the trees, and very few people. Today was interrupted by the sound of a chainsaw, probably taking down some diseased trees (there are a lot of them around the South West right now). Still a great few hours spent among wonderful trees

Went to Ashbrittle, Somerset to see the oldest living thing in Great Britain, no it's not Terry Wogan but a
Yew Tree, reputed to be over 3,000 years old. It was mature when Stonehenge was in use! 1,000 years before Christ. Quite something to see a tree that old, I've seen them in The States (they have even older trees there, the Bristlecombe Pine) but didn't know we had any that old. It was planted on a barrow (tomb) so probably has
someone important buried underneath. The poet William Wordsworth came to see it and wrote some prose.

Looks good enough for at least another thousand years

Great start to March after a bed February for photography. The view from Docklands over The River Thames to Canary Wharf is just amazing. I caught it when the tide was out and stood on a sandy beach; when the boats went by there were even waves! These sandy beaches would be great in the summer in between tides for the locals to relax on. I love London

St Mary Redcliffe

Oh dear, this month is off to a bad start; already the 20th and only one image to show for it. We've had an inordinate amount of grey days, only one good dawn (which I missed) and no dramatic weather at all. Definitely feeling the need to be creative, so perhaps I'll photograph the cat!

Uh-oh, just reached the young age of 51. Time to take some more photographs before my eyesight goes completely. My hearing's already on the way out (too many Clash gigs in the seventies), but my photography is still improving - something I didn't expect. Perhaps I've just got even fussier? I looked at some of the 'Landscape Photographer of the year 2010' winning images and frankly I'd have deleted some of them, too many with obvious photoshop, and some just plain bad. There were some great images too though.
Something I always tell people who come for tuition, is to edit their images carefully and only show people their best work. That way you get good feedback and encouragement, rather than yawns and a change of conversation!

These images were made with my new large format digital camera, a Cambo Wide DS, with Schneider Apo-Digitar
XL lenses with a Phase One P45 (39 Megapixel Digital Back). It gives a new meaning to the word sharp: -

December 2010

Thank you God for the incredible weather. I know I've only been here for 50 years in this lifetime, but I've never seen such magical sights. Trees covered in Hoar Frost and Snow over most of Somerset and Bristol. Simply glorious. Such
transient beauty; all gone in a day and a half - but what a day and a half!

November 2010

Yet another Autumn has gone by without making it up to Scotland, disappointing. Still, the reason I couldn't go is because I was busy with clients, so no complaints. I missed the peak time at Westonbirt too, but still managed to
get a few shots that I was happy with
: -

'New' Grand Pier Bare Maple Tree Leaves with Raindrops Wet Maple Leaves

The shot above of the rebuilt Grand Pier was taken on a wet evening that showed no promise at all. Luckily, the Phase One camera takes such good long exposures that I still managed to get a good shot, with plenty of detail
(39 megapixels) and colour (16 bit processors). My timing was good for getting some foreground detail before it was covered by the incoming tide.

I love Beech Trees at any time of the year, but in Autumn some of the leaves go golden, some brown and some stay green, making a great subject close up or far away. They have interesting smooth silver bark and are great shapes too, whether in leaf or bare in winter. Definitely in my top five Trees.

October 2010

After September was such a great month for photography, I'm not expecting too much from October, but
mine's off to a fine start with a great panoramic of Watermouth Bay in Devon. Seamlessly stitching 7 images
together makes this a 64 megapixel image(!) that will enlarge to wall size.

Watermouth Bay, Devon

I spent too long driving around to find 'the view' though, frustrated by parking charges everywhere (this doesn't happen in France, over here everyone's too greedy to take some money off you) and a Private Beach (shouldn't be allowed; the council should buy it back for everyone to use). Finally I found a way to park near the South West
Coast Path, and walked to the view.

Been having fun with my compact camera (Canon s90), and here's an image of St Pauls Cathedral taken hand-held
(I was with my wife, so no tripod). Good performance for a compact, but not good enough to go on sale: -

The image below was very lucky; I'd photographed it the day before and felt like I'd covered it. Then, whilst driving past in unpromising midday sun I saw the clouds looking good, and by the time I'd set up this amazing cumulus cloud moved into exactly the right place. It perfectly echoes the line formed by the hedge in the lower part of the shot. This gives the composition a sense of balance

Tree, Exmoor

My favourite trip so far this month was to Golitha Falls on Bodmin Moor, Cornwall. Stunning in Autumn with it's
layer of fallen Beech leaves (see below).

The Starlings are flocking together on the Somerset Levels; I've been twice to Shapwick Heath already but didn't get a photograph worthy of publishing here. Got a good cloud image with no Starlings instead
