Moonrise #4928
Avebury Stone Circle, Wiltshire, England

I arrived in Avebury to catch the moon rising behind the standing stones on West Kennet Avenue.
The tourists had gone and I was left alone (or so I thought) with a sight of rare beauty. As I was taking
this shot, I looked down and was totally surprised to see a Hare right near my feet. It slowly hopped off,
but I could hardly believe it. I don't see Hares very often, and to see one so close was a real treat.
This shot, showing detail in the moon, was impossible before digital technology. You either had a detailed
moon and everything else was black, or a very bright moon with no detail (looking more like the sun)
and everything else correctly exposed. So, this shot is a very modern
interpretation of a very ancient
sight - one that has been around for over 4000 years. West Kennet Avenue was built between 2400 and
2300 BC
