The Anasazi were the ancestors of native americans. This village was reached by ladders to keep it a safe haven from intruders.

This group of buildings in the canyon undercliff is where the Anasazi
(ancestors of Native Americans) lived. The foreground tree is deceptive
and makes the buildings look much smaller than they are. They used
ladders to reach their homes. This must have been quite a place to live,
safe from intruders, wild animals and flooding
